چکیده

A bioassay technique based upon the respiratory response of Tetrahymena pyriformis to intoxication, which gives results within 10 min, was used to evaluate the quality of a number of effluents from three wastewater treatment plants in the PretoriaJohannesburg area. Toxic activity was detected in both treated and untreated wastewater effluent. The technique was shown to be sufficiently sensitive to monitor toxicity in raw and treated wastewater effluent, and to evaluate the efficiency of the various treatment stages to remove toxicants from raw waters.

A NEW BIOLOGICAL SCREENING SYSTEM FOR LOCAL ANAESTHETICS BY INHIBITION MOBILITY OF TETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS

An alternative in vitro approach to drug screening has been the use of human cell cultures for antiviral agents and microbial cell cultures for the assessment of the carcinogenic potential of selected compounds. A number of protozoan species have been also used as drug screens for anti-protozoal agents. The ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis species has been widely utilised as a dru...

Evaluation of Baffle Fixes Film up Flow Sludge Blanket Filtration (BFUSBF) System in Treatment of Wastewaters from Phenol and 2,4-Dinitrophenol Using Daphnia Magna Bioassay

Background: Phenol and nitrophenol are common compounds found in different types of industrial wastewater known as serious threats to human health and natural environment. In this study, Daphnia magna was used to evaluate the effectiveness of "baffle fixes film up flow sludge blanket filtration" (BFUSBF) system in elimination of phenolic compounds from water. Methods: D. magna cult...

Correlations of Vibrio fischeri bacteria test data with bioassay data for other organisms.

Linear relationships of the median lethal concentrations of several hundreds of chemicals for a variety of organisms with Vibrio fischeri median effective concentrations are investigated. Significant correlations can be developed for many aquatic species including the fishes fathead minnow, bluegill, catfish, goldfish, goldorfe, guppy, killifish, rainbow trout, sheepshead minnow, and zebrafish;...

Can imprinting play a role in the response of Tetrahymena pyriformis to toxic substance exposure?

Among protozoa, Tetrahymena pyriformis is the most commonly ciliated model used for laboratory research. All living organisms need to adapt to ever changing adverse conditions in order to survive. This article focuses on the phenomenon that exposure to toxic doses of the toxicants protects against a normally harmful dose of the same stressor. This first encounter by toxicant provokes the phenom...

Exocytotic and phagocytotic activities of Tetrahymena pyriformis are not influenced by Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins

The ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis GL was tested for its applicability to the detection of botulinum neurotoxins. Botulinum neurotoxins attack different proteins of the SNARE-complex, which is involved in fusion processes of the cellular membrane traffic. The exocytosis of enzymes and the phagocytosis of germs include several presumptive SNARE-dependent pathways within T. pyriformis. Acid phosp...
